FCB1010 Operation Overview

The Behringer FCB1010 is a MIDI based foot controller pedal.  It has 100 memory positions to store MIDI controller data for up to 5 separate MIDI devices.  See the Connections overview section for info on how to connect your FCB.

The FCB has 10 numbered buttons, two expression pedals and 10 banks of stored preset data.  When you press one of the preset buttons, one or more MIDI commands are send to any connected MIDI gear.

MIDI commands can include Program Change (PC) commands, Change Controller (CC) commands, and Note commands.

PC commands are typically used to select a specific preset sound patch on a piece of connected MIDI gear.  For example, the Line 6 POD unit has 36 internal memory locations for storage of user sound patches.   Sending a PC command to the POD would change the POD preset sound.

When a PC command is sent, a value between 1 and 128 is used by the FCB1010.  For some MIDI units, this may be one off from the desired patch you need.  Some MIDI units use zero as the first patch and some use one.  Determine how your MIDI unit functions and set the PC value to the figure that selects the desired patch.

Some MIDI units also support more than 128 presets.  Most such MIDI units, such as keyboards, arrays their presets in banks.  It usually takes a CC command to change the bank, and then the normal PC command works within the selected bank.

CC commands are typically used to change some aspect of the currently selected preset sound.  For example, a CC command might be used to turn an effect on or off in a unit like the Line 6 POD.  When a CC command is sent, a value between 0 and 127 is used.

Note commands are typically used with keyboard gear to play a specific note.  They can also be used for some other purposes.

The FCB also has two Expression Pedals which also send out CC command data.  The difference here is that the CC value sent varies when you move the pedal up and down.  Expression pedals are typically used to control things like guitar/keyboard volume, guitar Wah-Wah, or other sound changes like distortion level, reverb depth.  The options here are only limited by the capabilities of the connected MIDI gear.

Each FCB preset can send up to five MIDI Program Change (PC) commands to five separate MIDI units.  This allows the user to have one FCB button send PC commands to up to five different MIDI units.  For example, suppose you have both a Line 6 POD and a TC Electronics G-Major.  Pressing a single FCB button can then change the presets on both the POD and G-Major units.

Each FCB preset can send up to 2 CC commands.  A common use for CC commands is to turn specific effects, like distortion in a Line 8 POD, on or off.  When a CC command is sent, a value between 0 and 127 is used.

Each FCB preset can have either or both of the expression pedals enabled for sending CC data.  For example a CC7 is used to control volume on most MIDI gear units.  Sending a value between 0 and 127 will change the volume from zero to maximum.  The FCB can also have both min and max values set for an expression pedal.  This allows the full up position to not be zero volume, but perhaps a default rhythm volume.  This makes it easy to return to a know volume level with the pedal.

Each PC, CC, and Note commands send data on a specific MIDI channel.  You set this up in the global setup area.  There are 16 MIDI channels and you need to be sure that the channel you are using for sending data matches the channel your external MIDI gear uses to receive.  If they don't match, commands will have no effect at all.

You program the FCB to send those commands necessary for operation of your MIDI gear.  You can use the FCB to do this directly or a PC Editor software package.  Most will find that the PC Editor approach is much faster.
