FCB1010 Firmware
The "brain" inside the FCB is a small firmware chip. This firmware chip controls basic options and operations. The current version of this chip is 2.5.1E (or later). Many FCB units are sold with an older firmware chip installed. If your unit has a firmware chip earlier than 2.3, then you should probably consider getting an upgrade chip from Behringer. Behringer will generally provide these as no cost to you. Firmware earlier than 2.3 had problems with some FCB functions.
The current version of the PC Editor includes the feature to automatically query and display the FCB firmware version. This is the recommended approach to determine firmware version. Some early chip versions may not respond to software query.
The only absolutely sure way to find out what version of firmware you have is to take the bottom plate off the FCB unit and looking at the chip. This involves removing about 16 small screws connecting the bottom plate to the unit (the 3 recessed screws near the power cord connection do not need to be removed).
When opened, the firmware chip is in the middle of the unit and has the firmware version printed on top. An example of an opened unit is shown below. Firmware chip is located near top center of picture.
Included below is a picture of two different firmware chips. The one on the left is a Behringer chip and the one on the right a third party chip with UnO firmware.
The only way to upgrade the firmware is to install a new chip. There is NO normal software based download approach that can be used here.
If you have access to an EPROM burner, you can download a chip image (in the form of a ZIP file) from the Behringer web site and use that to create your own updated firmware chip. Keep in mind that burning your own firmware chip is not an easy procedure and requires special electronics gear that very very few users will either own or have access to.
You can also get a chip from Behringer. There are also some small firms that sell upgraded firmware chips (cost is usually in the $10 range). Some find the purchase process faster than getting an upgrade from Behringer. See the Links section on the Yahoo FCB1010 group site for firms that offer such firmware upgrade chips.
